even if its junk, would make a backup handheld, etc.... got good reviews on another forum.;... 200+ reviews on amazon, vast majority positive..

2 way, dual band Handheld HAM for under $40. i bought the cable and software so its less than $50 to my door. will (hopefully) be a decent backup to my vehicle mounted radio... i dont expect it to be 'professional grade'...

Actually those and the wuxon's are pretty sturdy units, especially for the coin involved.

If the software is the same, you can open them up quite a bit. Not sure what freq your fire department works on, but you might even get into that band with it as well.

The wuxon's can be opened up into to work with the cheap handy talkies that make the wild 2-5 mile claims by various companies.

Only issues I have heard are the batteries but what the heck, for that coin you can hit batteries plus and get one built and still be ahead.

I like it better than beating the yaseu up camping and what not.

What is involved in getting a license? I heard you can do it all online?

You can study and do practice exams online, but to my knowledge you have to take the written test in front of 3 VE's (Volunteer Examiners)
I recently upgraded my license and there were 3 guys there that sign off that you pass.

Correct. License exams are done in person. There is a group that holds testing each week at Cliff Cave Library in South County. I can get more information for you if you would like.

“The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.” -- Jeff Cooper
